My First £1 Million Cold Call

As I’ve already mentioned, I’m Matt Elwell. 

I started selling tampons door-to-door at 17.

I’d knock on 150 doors a day.

It was so bad that I thought my name was F#ck off.

Now, I’m not a “type A” person.

I’m more like a cuddly teddy bear.

I love people. Hate rejection.

So getting told to f#ck off 150 times a day was horrific.

Rather than quit, I developed a sales process. 

I learned to ask questions and listen. 

That got a completely different response. 

I started having conversations… 

And making money. 

Within a few months, I was the top seller. 

A year later, I moved into another cut-throat market… 

Selling photocopiers. 

I immediately saw the same problems in the team.
 
People thought they had the “gift of the gab”. 

All I saw were long conversations about holidays that ended with No. 

I quickly realised...

The sales process I developed knocking on doors, also worked over the phone.

As soon as I started using it, two things happened… 

  •  I got rid of time wasters.
  • ​I captured people’s attention really quickly.
That allowed me to have a friendly chat with people to see if I could help them.

If I could, I’d make the sale.

If they weren’t ready to buy immediately. I had laid the foundation for a future sale because they had a great experience.

Within a few months, I topped the sales charts

Then started training my own sales team.

As good as it was, I always wanted to start my business. 

At 22, I grabbed the opportunity with both arms.

Running a tile and bathroom business with my Dad and brother.

The business took off.

Much faster than any of us ever hoped.

So in 2005, we bought some land and built a 6,000 square foot showroom.

We opened the doors in August 2008.

A month later, the economy was in freefall. 

We survived for one simple reason…

We had a proven sales process.

We stopped all our marketing.
 
And kept making cold calls.

One cold call was to Next.

Most people wouldn’t dream of cold-calling a national retail chain.

Yet with my process, I bypassed the gatekeepers.

You see, Next is just like any other business…

They want a good price and reliable service. 

Our slogan was - “Small enough to care. Big enough to deliver.” 

Next loved it. 

And I closed a £165,000 contract.

Not bad for a day's work.
 
But nothing in comparison with this…

Remember the 6,000 square foot showroom we built?

After 5 years, it was time to move on.

So I looked for a buyer.

My first call was to Britain’s largest supermarket chain.
 
By the time I put the phone down, I had an agreement in principle.

Now, this was a complex property deal.

We had to jump through a lot of planning hoops.

That took time.

The end result… 

A 20-year lease for £1.5 million. 

Now, I’m not doing deals like that every day. 

But I am using the same sales process every day.

Only now, I spend most of my time teaching other people how to use my system.

This can be big multi-national companies or sole traders, and everything in between.

It really doesn’t matter if you’ve got a sales team of one (yourself) or one thousand…

Because it comes down to the same thing… 

Having a natural conversation that ends with both parties getting what they want.

Now, there is a process to the conversation…

Without that, you’re just winging it. 

But this is NOT a script.

I’m not telling you what to say.

This is a sales process that you can fill with your passion and personality.

Why You Should Never “Handle” Objections

When that happens, you don’t get many objections.

But you still get a few.

That’s why I developed the 3A’s formula.

This formula explores the objection, rather than trying to overcome it.

What’s the difference?

When you try to overcome the objection, you make the customer’s decision wrong.

When you explore the objection, you better understand the buyer’s position. Then present them with the best solutions.

In other words, the 3A’s formula puts you back into a friendly conversation with the customer, so you can help them get what they want.

Sometimes that leads to a sale right now.

Sometimes it doesn’t.

That’s why I’ll also show you my 7-step follow-up process. 

This is like picking up £50 notes from the floor of your business. 

Because most people don’t follow up at all. 

Only 20% of businesses follow up more than three times.
